The Seattle Saracens rugby started from humble beginnings in a house in Seattle 1966 . A group of men decided to start Seattle Rugby club and adorning the killer whale, or Orca, as its emblem.
The club ; as to this day, played much of its rugby in the British Columbia Rugby league in Canada. In 1972 Seattle RFC became one of the founder members for the Fraser Valley Rugby Union (FVRU) in BC. The objective of the FVRU was to promote and expand rugby across the Pacific North West.
1972 also saw the emergence of a new rugby club in the pacific NW called the Old Puget Sound Beach RFC (OPSB) . This club was formed from the ranks of players involved with the University of Washington rugby program.
OPSB also began its days playing within the FVRU and local derby matches with the Seattle RFC were hotly contested over the next 30 plus years.
FVRC was incorporated into British Columbia Rugby Union. Both Seattle based teams competed in BCRU but also and began competing in the newly formed USA div 1 league. As years passed Seattle concentrated much of its rugby in BC but also played USA division 1 whereas OPSB concentrated much of its rugby on USA division 1.
OPSB Became charter members of the Rugby Super league (RSL) which was set up in hopes to promote elite rugby in the US. Although the league is no longer around today the desire to better rugby in the US has not died with it.
Over time, although arch rivals, Seattle and OPSB saw the opportunity to help each other on both sides of the border and try and strengthen each other both on and off the field. In 2007 the clubs combined.
A merger of such rivals was not without its difficulties over the coming years but those who stayed the course realized that there was a common goal and that was for rugby to continue to grow .
In 1997 the women's rugby club in Seattle, the Seattle Breakers RFC was approached by Seattle RFC and meeting were had with Seattle rugby club to join forces and help develop rugby for men and women and build an all encompassing rugby club.
As Seattle RFC grew, interest came in 2012 from one of the top professional rugby clubs in Europe - London Saracens. They approached the Seattle RFC and encouraged the club to become the USA representitive of its global network. Today we are proud to be today ...the Seattle Saracens .
From our humble and different beginnings we have evolved into who we are today . Through all the trials of strong competition, between OPSB and Seattle RFC on the field, the core of what we all believed in and wanted remained strong. #WeareSeattleSaracens/P>
Our goal is to provide rugby for both men and women at all levels and to promote the game into mainstream America.
In 2015 we won both the BCRU mens & women's championship and won the USA Women's Div 1 championship. We also are three times in a row USA mens 7's championship holders and women's 2015 USA 7's finalists.
We are very proud of what we have accomplished so far but aware the journey is never over and has actually just begun.
Seattle Saracens are proud to be a rugby club in this great city and we accept the challenge to be champions on the field, provide rugby for all age groups and abilities, help our community, build friendships and support families. Together we can share the great core values of rugby which are - friendship, respect , hard work , tolerance and camaraderie.
Ultimately we look forward to growing our rugby family within our own club and build the relationships with all those who value this great sport and all it can offer both on and off the field, for players and supporters.
Come and join in the journey we promise it will be rewarding!!
