On the weekend of June 24th and 25th teams from the West coast converged on Corvallis, Oregon to play in the Great Northwest Challenge (GNC).
The youth Loggers (NW reps) team, made up of 7th and 8th graders was supported and coached by a youthful and talented staff including Seattle Saracens players Nick Evans and William Rasileka. The Varsity and Junior Varsity girls HS program was also coached by Seattle Saracens players; These Kellen Gordon, Sharon Blaney, Marty Quick and Carly Mackinnon. The Boys Junior Varsity and Varsity teams were coached by Seattle Head Coach and Director of Rugby, Justin Fitzpatrick and Seattle Saracens Assistant Coach and President Kevin Flynn.
Management and coaching was also provided by current hooker for the Saracens Daniel Trierweiler, Seattle alumni Steve Brennan running the program, Eastside Lions coaches who helped were Neil Russell and Ray Keane, along with help in the forward from WWU coach Allan Law. It was a great weekend and exciting to see so many young players playing and the caliber of rugby bodes well for the future of USA rugby.
After the GNC was over, the Saracens reached out to those young men and women graduating in hopes to see them playing in the Seattle program or in the programs of the partner clubs and other clubs in the future.
The Loggers program looks forward to linking more youth events to club rugby to educate and encourage those players and parents to continue their journey playing and supporting rugby after their schooling is over.
